Emily and Joseph’s Story
Emily and Joseph are a married couple who both have dementia.
Emily and Joseph are a married couple who both have dementia. The couple were already supported by a live in carer when they came to The Avalon Group to ask for additional support. Avalon were asked to provide respite for the live in carer and also provide Emily and Joseph with the opportunity to get out and about in the local community, doing activities that they enjoy.
So, for example, one week support may comprise of two half days; perhaps taking the couple to visit a local garden centre or going out for lunch. Another week support may be provided for a whole day to accommodate lengthier outings such as visits to the seaside. The couple’s regular Support Worker holds the Award in Dementia Awareness and has worked with people with dementia for many years. This means that she has extensive experience of risk assessing activities; ensuring that people do not feel inhibited but also undertake activities within a safe environment.
As well as supporting Emily and Joseph to do the things that they enjoy, the support also means that their live in carer can visit friends and family members or pursue other leisure activities. The couple’s closest family member (their niece) lives over 50 miles away and the care offered by the couple’s live in carer and The Avalon Group mean that she can be reassured that the couple have 24 hour care and support combined with enjoyable activities that enrich their lives.
