Helen Ward
Mental Health Lead
I’ve worked for Avalon for nearly three years, but have been in my current role since the start of 2021.
I’m a qualified social worker with more than 20 years’ experience and have spent much of that time working in, and managing, community mental health services for both local authorities and the charitable sector. In this time, I’ve worked with customers, and their families, of all ages, backgrounds and situations who are effected by mental health difficulties, learning disability, autism, dementia, substance misuse, neurological conditions or palliative care.
I have three young children who take up much of my time and energies outside of work. As a family we enjoy going for walks in all weathers in the countryside and on the beach – we don’t mind getting wet and muddy! We also like to cook and eat good food together and when I can, I enjoy losing myself in a film, play or book, and visiting art galleries.
I enjoy my job as it allows me to pursue my interests in mental health and people – there are always new things to learn. It’s great that every day I have a role in supporting those affected by mental health issues, be it customers or staff and to help raise awareness of mental health and challenge the stigma of being diagnosed with a condition. I like working for Avalon as they are an employer that supports their employees who are also juggling parenting or other caring responsibilities.
